Buttry’s company, Digital First Media, is among the boldest in the newspaper industry in putting digital strategy at the center of what was a venerable media company focused on printed newspapers. 8:30-9am – Coffee, mingling
9-9:10am – Introduction, schedule for the day
9:10-9:55am – Thinking and working digital first. Will cover the daily workflow for digital and legacy media (print, broadcast). What it’s like to work in a legacy news organization that operates in a digital-first environment. Why the digital-first approach to news is important (for news organizations and for individuals).
9:55-10:30am – Thinking and working at a digital-only news organization. What does an online/mobile-only news operation look like when employing “digital-first” thinking. Advice from Steve.
10:30-10:40am – Break; coffee
10:40-11:40am – Overview of digital tools and techniques. Will cover reporting with social media; some combination of Twitter, blogging, liveblogging, social media, databases, crowd-sourcing.
11:40am-12:30pm – Lunch
12:30-1:15pm – Showcase of best digital-first works of journalism, from DFM journalists and elsewhere.
1:15-2pm – How to find and land your job in digital journalism. What students must do (while still in school) to be ready to jump into a digital-first job, or to be ready to use a digital-first mentality to launch their own news enterprise.
