Steve Outing

Digital News Test Kitchen program director and founder
Steve OutingOuting is a thought leader in the online media industry and an expert on news innovation, news business models, social media, and digital transformation of media. He wrote a popular and widely read column for Editor & Publisher Online from 1995 to 2009, which covered the news industry and its evolution in the digital age. He was a senior editor at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and led its Eyetrack III research study of online news website consumer behavior. Over the years, Outing has written various books and research reports on Internet and media; consulted to media companies; given presentations and speeches around the world; and been interviewed and quoted by news organizations worldwide. Prior to 1994 and the emergence of the web, he worked as an editor and writer in the newspaper and magazine industry.

Paul S. Voakes

Professor and Digital News Test Kitchen faculty director
Professor Paul VoakesProfessor Voakes joined the CU School of Journalism & Mass Communication in July 2003 and served as dean through June 2011. Currently, he is a professor in the Journalism & Mass Communication program and faculty director for the Test Kitchen. Prior to his arrival in Boulder, he spent nine years on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Journalism. His Ph.D. is from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his research and teaching specializations are in mass media law and ethics, news writing, reporting and editing, and math/statistics for journalism. Before entering academia he was a journalist for 15 years at newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area, most recently as an op-ed columnist for the San Jose Mercury News. He is the author of The Newspaper Journalists of the ’90s (ASNE, 1997); co-author of Working with Numbers and Statistics: A Handbook for Journalists (2005); and a co-author of the forthcoming The American Journalist in the 21st Century.
